Masala Dal Fry Recipe (English)


  • Split Gram Lentil: 250 grams
  • Onion (Browned): 1/2 cup
  • Tomato: 3 pcs
  • Tomato Puree: 1/2 cup
  • Ginger Garlic: 1 tbsp
  • Salt: as per taste
  • Red Chillies: 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric: 1/2 tsp
  • White Cumin Seeds: 1 tbsp
  • All Spice Powder: 1 tbsp

Baghar Ingredients:

  • Butter: 1/2 cup
  • Ginger: 1 inch stick
  • Cumin Seeds: 1 tbsp
  • Green Chillies: 6 pcs
  • Oil: 2 tbsp



  1. Boil lentil.
  2. Fry onions in a pot in 1/4 cup oil, until brown.
  3. Once brown, add ginger garlic, white cumin, tomato (or tomato puree) and roast well.
  4. Add salt, red chillies, turmeric, all-spice powder and roast well.
  5. Then add lentil and roast and then add 1/2 cup water.
  6. Steam-cook for 10 minutes on low flame.

How to Make Baghar:

  1. Add 2 tbsp oil in 1/2 cup butter and add thin chopped ginger, green chillies and cumin and fry well.
  2. Pour on dal and serve hot.
