8 oz. dhal
1 pint (U.S. 2 ½ cups) Water
3 stalks Celery
½ Teaspoon Turmeric powder
½ -inch slIce of Creamed Coconut
½ Teaspoon Chilli powder
1 Teaspoon ground cummin seeds Salt to taste
Oil for frying
pinch of Asafoetida (optional)
1 rounded Teaspoon Mustard seeds

How to make Celery with Lentils (Celery Sambar)


Wash the dhal thoroughly. Cover with 1 pint of water and cook until tender adding more water if necessary. Wash, trim and cut the celery into 4-inch pieces. Simmer in a little water with the turmeric until tender. Add the celery, coconut, chilli powder, cummin seeds and salt to the dhal. Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry the asafoetida, if used, with the mustard seeds, until they crackle. Combine with the dhal and serve with plain boiled rice.
