Potatoes 1kg
Grated Gruyere Cheese ( or cheddar cheese where you can’t get gruyere) 300gms
A pinch of salt
2 tbsp of cream
4 tbsp of milk
How to make Basic Swiss Gratin
METHOD:
1. Peel the potatoes and finely slice ten length wise. Thoroughly wash them.
2. Sprinkle a few drops of olive oil in an oven proof dish (preferably 6X12 Pyrex dish) and rub the oil with your fingers till the entire base and the sides are covered.
3. Layer the potatoes slices flat down in the dish till the entire base is covered. Make sure there is little overlapping of the potato slices.
4. Now sprinkle very little salt and add a handful of grated cheese to the dish. Sprinkle the cheese evenly.
5. Now add another layer of potatoes. Then another layer of cheese. Repeat the process till all the potatoes are layered in the dish. The top layer should be cheese.
6. Sprinkle the milk and the cream on the top and place it in a preheated oven for 40minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.
7. Keep checking the dish every 10 minutes to ensure its cooking correctly. Take it out of the oven when the top layer turn golden brown.
8. Serve hot. Enjoy
